Vail Pass - Polk Creek Stream Rehabilitation

FlyWater, inc. was subcontracted by Kiewit Infrastructure in 2026 to restore Polk Creek which flows under the Cap 5 Bridge on I-70’s Vail Pass. In order for a new bridge to be constructed and the old removed the creek had to be put in a pipe and filled in so crane pads could be installed. After majority of material was removed FlyWater, inc. was tasked with finding the native bed and installing several structures through the reach and a narrow bench to not only restore, but improve from what was originally there. Because the creek had been buried FlyWater, inc. worked closely with a restoration ecologist to construct a creek that matched what was naturally there. To do this the crew went upstream to find width and depth ratios as well as to understand what structures and banks should look like.
