Eagle River Fishery Improvement Project

FlyWater was hired by a ranch owner for a design build project on the Eagle River. The project was designed and built with several goals in mind: Protect water resources and infrastructure, increase and diversify angling opportunities during varying flow conditions, create a fun and sustainable fishery for novice to expert anglers, increase fish refugia and overwintering water, and improve angler accessibility. FlyWater worked with the landowner throughout the design process to accomplish their goals and vision for the property. The project was constructed in two phases with Phase 1 focusing on enhancing an existing side channel designed and built to create easy, kid friendly access. This was accomplished by constructing various structures to improve easier casting opportunities and fly presentation for a younger or novice angler by adjusting the depth and flowlines. The second construction phase involved a larger effort within the main channel with improvements including: increasing riffle and pool depth variability, optimizing low/moderate flow channel widths, installation of boulder spurs and habitat clusters, and strategically placed large woody debris. Phase 2 successfully created various angling opportunities of different levels of difficulty while also providing overwintering habitat to aid in fish retention across the property. Project was designed in 2022 with Phase 1 construction performed in 2023 and Phase 2 completed in 2024.
